Funding opportunity briefing
UK Research and Innovation has published its latest forward look of planned funding opportunities across its councils, including Innovate UK. The list currently runs to April 2027 and is a useful planning tool for research organisations, businesses and prospective partners. By our count, it contains 81 entries. The more important point is where they cluster. Twenty-eight are expected to launch in October, making the coming weeks a practical window for decisions that cannot be made well after a call has opened.

UKRI’s standard
8 weeks
Minimum window from launch for standard opportunities
UKRI expects standard opportunities to remain open for a minimum of eight weeks. That is welcome, but it sets a clear constraint. A mid-October opportunity could close in mid-December. For a serious bid, that is a short period in which to identify partners, agree contributions, build a credible work plan, develop costings and secure institutional approvals.
The value of the forward look is not that it provides final call documentation. UKRI is clear that opportunities remain under development, some details will change and not every future opportunity appears in advance. Its value is that it lets teams start the work that takes longest before the submission clock starts.
Dr Debbie Marsden, Lead Consultant
“Eight weeks is enough time to write a proposal. It is not enough time to find the right partners, agree the costings and secure institutional sign-off.”
Her advice is to choose two or three realistic targets now, verify eligibility and start the partnership conversations while there is still room to shape the project properly.
Twenty-one of the planned opportunities are tagged to UKRI’s IS-8 priority programme, which follows the eight growth-driving sectors in the Government’s Industrial Strategy. A further six sit within the Research and Development Missions Accelerator Programme. Together, those two programmes account for around a third of the pipeline.
This does not make responsive or council-specific funding less important. It does mean applicants should be explicit about the policy purpose their work serves. Advanced manufacturing, engineering biology, quantum technologies, semiconductors, frontier artificial intelligence, defence and national security, life-sciences manufacturing and creative industries feature repeatedly in the forward look.

Headline funding figures can create a misleading first impression. Six entries in the current list are invite-only or restricted to existing award holders, with two more using invite-only second stages. These include the Economic Statistics Centre of Excellence, the EPSRC Physical Sciences National Research Facilities refresh, the BBSRC strategic longer and larger full stage, the AHRC Large Grants full stage, phase two of the gambling harms partnerships and phase two of the Medicines Manufacturing Data Institute.
The lesson is straightforward: shortlist opportunities early, but confirm the actual eligibility and application process in the funding finder once each call launches. A good internal plan begins with opportunities that are genuinely open to the organisation and the partnership it can build.
Where substantial funding sits
Several forthcoming opportunities are worth marking in a diary now. The figures below are drawn from UKRI’s planned-opportunities page and should be checked again when the relevant call opens.
February 2027
Future Leaders Fellowships
c. £110m
Total fund indicated for round 12. Previous awards have ranged from £300,000 to more than £2 million.
October 2026
MRC Centre of Research Excellence
£26.25m
Maximum award for round five at outline stage, from a £50 million fund.
December 2026
UKRI venture doctorates
£25m
A planned single doctoral focal award combining doctoral training with entrepreneurship.
Innovate UK leads 14 of the entries, including £25 million for Farming Futures soil and water in October and £50 million for frontier artificial intelligence research and development consortia in December. For NHS Trusts and clinical academics, the Medical Research Council’s clinical fellowship suite appears in both October and January, providing two signposted points of entry.
Professor John Terry FMedSci, Co-Founder
“Panels can tell the difference between a partnership built over months and one assembled in a fortnight. The gap shows up in the detail: governance, costings and whether every partner has a reason to be there.”
The largest awards will attract experienced applicants and established consortia. Starting early gives teams time to test the delivery model, sharpen partner roles and make the investment case credible.
The next update to the forward look is due in December 2026. Before then, the practical priority is to shortlist relevant opportunities, check the direction of travel against your organisation’s plans and begin the partnership, work-package and costing conversations that will determine whether an eight-week application window is enough.
